Some animals we choose themselves to be in the apartment, others are uninvited guests.
Pests are of various kinds:
- some attack food and textiles, such as flour beetles, moth or fur beetles.
- some are bothering people, such as fleas and lice.
Bedbugs can be difficult to discover and it has become more common. The first signs of their occurrence can be bites on body parts that are not covered by clothes during night, often clustered together in the same place, bug droppings (small black dots) on the bed frame.
What can you do yourself?
The first thing to consider is that vermin and harmful insects often end up in our homes after a holiday abroad or other journey. It is important therefore to make sure you wash and clean your clothes and bags thoroughly when you come home.
To prevent vermin and harmful insects gaining a foothold in your apartment, make sure you give the apartment a thorough spring-clean a few times a year. For example:
- Empty your kitchen cupboards and drawers. Wash all your shelves and inside your drawers and behind the cooker.
- Wash any other kitchen equipment which can be pulled away from the wall.
- Vacuum-clean around the skirting-boards in the kitchen using a small nozzle. Since insects often hide in crevices and cracks, it is important to clean these thoroughly.
- Then wash all your clothes and sheets to ensure that you have got rid of all the insects.
In spite of thorough cleaning, it may be necessary to treat inaccessible nooks and crannies using a pesticide if you have had an insect problem. This should be done be a qualified pest control technician.
