Next chapter for classic Flamman – welcomes a growing community
Exciting developments are underway in the iconic student housing complex Flamman in Gottfridsberg, Linköping. As Linköping's first student housing community, Flamman has been a hub for student culture since the 1960s. Now, it's time to update the area to suit the preferences and lifestyle of contemporary students while significantly increasing the current 250 apartments.
What’s happening in Flamman?
“We will renovate existing buildings in Flamman and simultaneously densify the area, adding 187 newly constructed student apartments. The goal is to offer diverse housing to cater to various demands of accomodation,” says Thomas Lilja, the CEO of Studentbostäder.
During the renovation, most corridor rooms will be transformed into individual studios. The remaining corridor rooms will be updated in various ways to meet international standards for student rooms and enhance social spaces. Each room will have its own refrigerator, and communal areas will be expanded.
Tell us about the new student apartments
“We have permits for 187 new apartments in the Flamman area, consisting mainly of studios, with some two-bedroom units and what we call friend apartments, essentially three-bedroom units. Construction began in January, and the new apartments are expected to be ready by the start of the semester in 2026,” says Thomas. He also notes that students seek the same quality in their housing as other renters: a private apartment at a reasonable rent with good standards.
“Smart storage solutions to efficiently utilize the entire volume of the apartment, not just the floor space, are also in demand, and we aim to incorporate that into the new design,” adds Thomas.
Why will students choose Flamman?
“Beyond the quality of the apartments, Flamman’s strong resident association and the culture in Flamman’s student pub will continue to attract students. It’s a genuinely social housing area with fantastic opportunities for activities, study, and socializing. Moreover, its location is unbeatable, close to the city, campus, and student life,” concludes Thomas Lilja.
